Purely as a writer, Moore. Most of Stan Lee's best work was due to people around him making up all of the good ideas, like Kirby, Ditko, etc.

His solo stuff is pretty.....bad in comparison.

IMO they're on the same level now in terms of impact, Alan Moore (along with Gaiman & Morrison) paved the way for a new style of framework and narrative/storytelling in comics that are being used right now by current writers.

Like what Lee & Kirby did in their heydays, Moore did it too and then some.

stan lee gave the bird to the comic's code and thanks to him and jack comics went from being just for children to being for everyone without stan and jack there is no way moore's stuff even happens on top of that stan lee had tons of great books that will be iconic forever while alan moore only has like 2 or 3 series and none of them will be as big how many of of discovered comics through something alan moors did show of hands

bull you can clearly see the difference between stan's and jacks idea's stan wrote the more grounded wise cracking characters while jack was more responsible for the more alien and cosmic characters the thing and spiderman has stan lee all over them while jack was more responsible for the cosmic stuff like surfer galactus the celestials.

@comic_book_fan: Actually Thing was based almost completely around Jack Kirby's personality himself, so I don't think Stan Lee had much to do with that.

Spider-Man's been a controversial topic, but many people agree now that Ditko came up with many aspects of the character. Stan of course wasn't legally allowed to state that he was a co-creator.

In fact, people who had a look at the original manuscripts of stuff like the FF and so fourth agree that Kirby did pretty much all of the writing and drawing of the issues, with Stan only correcting minor grammar issues and adding in words here and there.

This become obvious when Kirby left Marvel and created the New Gods by himself. What did Lee create by himself? Nothing.

Stan Lee definitely pioneered the idea of making superheroes relatable. He added the soap opera quality and relationship drama. Not just romantic relationships but things like Ben Grimm being depressed and arguing with Reed Richards.

Before Stan Lee, all superheroes were very one dimensional and idealized. They did not act like realistic people.

Jack Kirby is the one who made scenarios big and epic. Stan Lee is the one who had the characters react to big and epic situations in a realistic way.

Steve Ditko created Spider-Man whereas Stan Lee created Peter Parker. That’s the way I think about it.

Another example is that Jack Kirby created Silver Surfer, as a cosmic being. But Stan Lee gave Silver Surfer pathos.

To me, that honestly depends.

Stan Lee makes better superhero stories.

Alan Moore makes better 'mature' stories, and he largely impacted what would later become Vertigo.

I have only read V for Vendetta and Saga of the Swamp Thing from Moore. And those are better than anything from Stan imo.

I’ve recently read Watchmen and currently reading Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, and they’re both some of the most intriguing comics I’ve read.

Stan was an amazing creator and influencer at best. Most people here are only going on over what he did to comics as a whole. In terms of pure writing, there were people far better than him. And Moore is on a completely different level.
