Whitebeard comes from an era where the legends of piracy made a name for themselves and in that era is recognized as the most powerful pirate in the world standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Roger:
Whitebeard was only the one truly equals with Roger and they engaged in battles where their intent was to kill and yet never was successful. The Whitebeard we saw upon his first introduction is past his Prime, not being the version that could tussle with Rogerestablishing well and clear that Old Whitebeard is nothing of what he used to be. Despite being old, it doesn’t bump him down from the top-tier spot, rather he still had an immense standing compared to the strongest fighters of the world as he became an Emperor Of The Sea. This meant being rivals with the other top fighters of the world and neither could effectively destroy each other due to their strength, it being referred to as nearly impossible because of that. Angering Whitebeard, the “King Of The Seas” that other legendary names such as Garp refer to Whitebeard as, even in his old age is still highlighted as a significant threat, with Whitebeard being directly stated as the strongest old man in the world and thus superiority over the other elderly in One Piece, more specifically the legends such as Rayleigh, a legend, noted by Garp when dealing with him when they’re already invoked a war with Whitebeard, another legend is too much on their end, a Rayleigh that Garp would know is old at this point. The implication is that Rayleigh is too much as a threat that manpower cannot be spared, not when they’re to do battle with an Emperor and that is shown in Rayleigh’s performance as well.
Rayleigh is a legend, noted by Garp himself and dealing with him when they’re already invoked a war with Whitebeard, another legend is too much on their end, a Rayleigh that Garp would know is old at this point. The implication is that Rayleigh is too much as a threat that manpower cannot be spared, not when they’re to do battle with an Emperor and that is shown in Rayleigh’s performance as well. Rayleigh in his old age held down Admirals for a good period of time, effectively stopping his movements, something even Post-Wano Snakeman Luffy couldn’t do. Kizaru, because he failed his task of capturing the Strawhats due to Rayleigh’s interference, captured several hundred pirates to vent his anger, showcasing Kizaru wasn’t at all limiting his capabilities, more like he just outright couldn’t due to how much Rayleigh pressed him:
Rayleigh consistently makes clear that he doesn’t move as well as he used to, while also being rusty with the sword as he says it’s been a while since he’s used one, verifying the fact everything we see him do as an Old Man is directly inferior to what Rayleigh could do in his Prime, meaning someone like Kizaru would get overwhelmed and likely beaten by Prime Rayleigh. He mentions his old age when he realizes the Strawhats are in danger and he can’t go to help them, implying in his Prime, he’d have been able to simultaneously deal with Kizaru and save the Strawhats. Rayleigh’s reputation put him on a pedestal where even Emperors were worrisome.
Old Man Garp who makes it insanely clear that the years have caused him to weaken, performing feats incomparable to what he could do while in his Prime and 2 years later from this moment and Garp again speaks about how his current performance still isn’t as good as his Prime and the fact more years would have gone by means that Current Garp isn’t even as strong as the Garp who appeared in Enies Lobby or Marineford Pre-Timeskip. Being nerfed by old age and completely inactive doesn’t stop the fact that even still, he’s viewed and placed on the same level as an Admiral and in his Old Age is still being offered the position of an Admiral. This tells us plain and simple Old Garp is as strong as the Marines greatest fighting force while not as strong as when he was in his Prime. We see this strength in demonstration when he fights Kuzan and quite literally overwhelming him:
Garp appears incredibly dominant in the fight, blitzing and grabbing Kuzan then slamming him into the ground after breaking out of his freezing position. Stacked on top of that is Garp running through several Blackbeard pirate commanders, having been burdened with protecting his students while facing hundreds and then competent fighters leaving him susceptible to attacks from said competent fighters which is exactly what happens to him and even then, Garp responds quickly by grabbing and body-slamming Shiryu, the one who stabbed him. These injuries still don’t slow Garp down, allowing him to directly equal Kuzan in a clash sustaining more damage, then gets back up, blitzing past Kuzan and forcing him to the ground to then simultaneously bullrush towards Pizarro to unleash a punch that staggers him allowing for Koby to get off his punch:
It is only then where Garp finally falls and is surrounded by the Blackbeard pirate commanders, completely outnumbered. Garp is past his prime, old and rusty by a lot, yet still holds his ground Garp while rusty and old fought an Admiral level combatant who was able to go 10 days with the most offensive based devil fruit from another Admiral level combatant, including other Commanders of the Yonko crew. Blackbeard praises the fact that this Old version of Garp still is incredibly hard to put down and there’s not many who actually can. The old legends still having top-tier fighting capabilities sets in stone that in their Prime, they would absolutely dominate most top tiers, which in turn establishes a clear gap between ”top-tiers” and thus putting even more distance between the impressive feats that exist within One Piece achieved by those not even qualifying for top-tier.
Haki is a subconscious power found within all people, utilizing the users willand when trained can be used in many combative ways. By extension, Haki can function as overpowering Devil Fruit abilities in ways like unleashing a tremendous outburst of this supernatural power. Overwhelming Haki can even be applied passively to those resistances, demonstrated by the emperors. This trick allowed Law who isn’t remotely on par with Emperors-Haki to negate powers thatemit diseases which transmute you into the opposite gender. Haki outright manipulates the intangible senses of a user, determination, intent to kill and the very will to fight all becoming weaponized in different types with various effects and these following types being:
This is the power that manifests your very spiritand requires those in the range of this ability to be mentally strong in order to resist it. Conqueror's Haki grows proportional to the physical and mental growthof the user and is the only way to be trained. Claded in Haki is also Whitebeard’s Supreme Grade Naginata, which can be coated with his Devil Fruit but he also combines his Haki with it as well, having used it to easily swat away Akainu’s offensive devil-fruit and no-sell the heat. The Naginata is also infused with his strongest offensive Haki due to his skills with Conquerors allowing him to reach the realm of the strongest and that’s by achieving Advanced Conqueror’s, a skill only the handful of the strongest can do, achieving top-tier attacking power for those all in possession of it. Roger’s Haki was praised by Kaido as he noted Roger wasn’t reliant on the abilities of devil-fruits, it’s his haki that made him formidable and yet despite that recognition, Whitebeard demonstrates being able to match that formidable Haki from Roger:
Infusing your ability with conquerors increases your attack potency by an order of an magnitude, so if one is using basic armament attacks which is already a big boost, then decides to infuse Conquerors, their attack potency increases by essentially a 10x amount. Even to experienced Haki users, they do not understand the mechanism of this no-contact feature, with it being an “unseen attack” You can outright repel attacks infused with your Conquerors forcefully preventing the person from getting close if necessary, however another level to that is affecting the heavens. Whitebeard and Roger when meeting in combathave split the skies, once again showing how both were very much matched in Haki. Even in his old age, he still demonstrates the capabilities to split the heavens with his Conquerors-infused attacks in his clash with Shanks:
Luffy when first utilizing Advanced Conquerors failed tosplit the skyand that was due to him being a beginner, utilizing it recklessly showing Luffy’s usage of it wasn’t nearly as refined as it became later on. People who can split the sky is less of a demonstration of sheer strength and more of a demonstration of your haki’s ability to “affect” which can extend to affecting abilities or people. In retrospect, the series paints as affecting the skies as a massive achievement for a Haki-user and that reason is very obviously related to your skill with Conquerors meaning other Advanced Conquerors users who can’t achieve the same effect should be as skilled with the ability compared to those who can split the heavens.
Armament Haki is both an offensive increase and defensive increase, stemming as the most important Haki type. For defensive purposes, Armament lets you straight up essentially no-sell attacks that would kill you without it, the increase of Armament is borderline exponential as Vergo made clear that his weapon was ordinary, but coated in Haki it’s a dangerous weapon enhancing said ordinary object tiers and tiers above what it can actually be capable of, completely breaking through Smoker’s Armament enhanced weapon and Armament is not just applied to the objects a user wield but the user themselves, meaning that their defense and offense both operate significantly above their normal capabilities if ordinary weapons also can be insanely amplified. In addition to being effective against just basic attacks, it also extends to countering the effects of devil-fruits:
Against Logia-abilities that turns the user intangible, Armament forcibly solidifies the user allowing those with armament to interact with their body or block spatial-based abilities (if their haki is strong enough), coating the user from having their main body transformed into a statue-like figure, something Caesar's Gas was capable of doing, a gas that seeps into the skin creeping into the nerves and leaving them suspended. The defense buffs of Armament being that big is notable for Big Mom added with her already incredibly tough defense and Big Mom is no stranger to utilizing Armament, even against people who aren’t on her level. A step above basic Armament is Advanced Armament, known to have two functions, the ability to project barriers and the ability to flow that haki internally:
The former is used as a deflection shield to push back opponents or like the Admirals, redirect attacks. Now, those who are in possession of Advanced applications of ACoC must also be able to utilize Advanced Armament, whether it’s the internal aspect and the external application, you must be able to do one of these things in order to utilize the “No-Contact” feature with ACoC. We know this because Luffy comments on how it was Hyogoro who taught him how to not make contact with your opponent, despite only learning advanced armament applications, not Conquerors. This no-contact feature protects the user from direct touch, even from things capable of melting you.
Rayleigh for one explains that Observation Haki can be utilized to capture movement speeds that could appear FTE to your vision and at basic levels allows you to effectively combat speed disparities and even create them. The most blatant example of this is Enel vs Luffy, when Enel couldn’t read the intent behind Luffy’s moves or when he loses focus, he is easily tagged or dodged
But when reading the intent of Luffy’s moves, Enel could effortlessly side-step and move several meters before Luffy’s attacks can actually land, constantly tagging and throwing him off balance with each attack. The disparity is no exaggeration, Luffy was easily dodged by Sasori and outright getting his rapid attacks weaved from one of the low-ranking high priests who also has Observation Haki, a Luffy who again was already faster than Enel without his usage of Mantra, yet this Enel completely styles on these Priests who possesses Observation Haki as well, simultaneously all of whom are just as efficient as Sasori with it. Whitebeard demonstrates this further when Ace had attempted to take Whitebeard’s life when he wasn’t on guard, such as when he was asleep or just taking a walk and having his attention diverted to what was ahead, these being multiple attempts from Ace:
No matter what, tagging Whitebeard from blindspots made it impossible in a physical condition where his sickness wasn’t overwhelming. Whitebeard’s Observation makes it impossible to off-guard him as Marco establishes that a Whitebeard even while old would have seen the attack coming no matter how off guard he was. A Prime Whitebeard shows that his Observation can pick up upon danger immediately faster than his other crewmates can and this is because Observation Haki is just not the ability to read intent that allows speed disparities to be created however, it is inherently sensing the presence of those around, being able to identify large groups of people and selectively pinpoint objects/people, especially the strong. The amount of area you can cover with Observation is directly proportional to your mastery and users like Enel’s priests are capable of utilizing their basic CoO to cover Islands.
The Gura Gura No Mi is a devil fruit stated to be no weaker than no logia when it comes to power, which is supportive of the emphasis of its power to literally threaten the world. Due to the sheer range of the Gura Gura No Mi, escaping to the ends of the very ocean won’t make you safe which is correlated to Vice Admirals telling Tsuru to stay back, but seeing Whitebeard’s might made her conclude that staying back is meaningless. It's not just stated once either, the novels note its destructive ability to destroy the world itself. This is contextually supported several times. First, the public consensus is well aware of Whitebeard’s ability and when talking about Whitebeard, people around the world are concerned about what will become of the world assuming there will be one after the war is over. This is reiterated again, the second Blackbeard obtained Whitebeard’s devil fruit, people specifically spouted concern for the world again now that Blackbeard has taken the Gura Gura No Mi, reaffirming that this world-threatening power is a threat to everyone and Blackbeard’s arrival by itself isn’t what caused that concern meaning it’s not his presence or ambush that put the world at stake. All of this is supplementary to the planet-wide scale Gura Gura No Mi possesses through the method of earthquakes, which can be put into perspective of its immense feats.
Whitebeard showed that the Gura Gura No Mi can generate Tsunamis that utterly dwarfed Marineford. The tidal waves alone towered over Marineford and these tidal waves weren’t even at their maximum height as like real-lifeTsunamis, they have a stage in which they start off small and start to increase in size over time. These Tidal Waves are bigger than even a fully generated Tsunami in real life when caused by a fault-line (which are fractures of rock in Earth’s crust causing a displacement of said rock) Earthquake, only reaching heights of 30 meters near certain parts of the water, overtime. “Mega tsunamis” are considered above the capabilities of any ordinary tsunami: aka ones that occur through a fault because there’s not a single fault-line based earthquake capable of generating tsunamis upon dozens and dozens of meters in height. Eventually, these tidal waves would become Tsunamis from Whitebeard’s created seaquake, a phenomenon that occurs when the seafloor gets uprooted:
The Tsunami completely towered over Marineford and Marineford is big enough that even Sanjuan Wolf who has a confirmed height of 180 meters was barely as tall as the Marine HQ building and the entirety of Marineford is bigger than even that. Whitebeard’s tidal-waves alone would far exceed Fault-line Earthquakes in irl that can reach teratons levels of energy accounting for its total seismic energy with just a 9.4-9.5 magnitude, as Earthquakes like that only generate Tsunamis way less than the hundred-meter mark in height, often in the 20-meter range. Furthering the destructive capabilities of the Gura Gura No Mi is its ability to outright tilt the very land and sea:
By grabbing air itself and pulling downward, the Gura Gura generates aftereffects like tsunamis that impact distant islands. This is the method of destruction the Gura Gura No Mi possesses and is particularly why it’s so fearful as well as being the most powerful paramecia. With no way to escape its range, it boasts that “world-destroying power” at the very least enough to life-wipe and destroy over that range, something we see a glimpse of.
As a user of the Gura Gura No Mi, they are given natural defenses while generating vibrations passively, allowing counters to things like Kuzan’s freezing that has been stated to be so potent, all living beings and matter, making it unable to move or function. These vibrations are able to travel significantly far, extending to distant islands just as a side effect of Whitebeard’s attacks and are very destructive even if Whitebeard targets the power of the quake fruit onto an opponent, demonstrated when Whitebeard split Marineford in half after temporarily downing an Admiral:
The danger of these Quakes is notable as in just two hits, they can take down top tiers. Added with the fact Whitebeard can coat his Quakes into his Supreme Grade Naginata allowing him to deliver both slicing based attacks and shockwaves simultaneously. These vibrations also gives the user to outright bust through spatial abilities as well:
Blackbeard is shown visibly disrupting and shattering Law’s ranged Spatial Room with his awakening also consistent with the manga where he uses Tremor Crush while in the applied Spatial Room and in the next page it disappears. The Gura Gura No Mi has shown to further interact with a greater potency of spatial abilities due to Law’s applied K-Room abilities to which we know can penetrate through Big Mom through spatial means despite originally, Big Mom’s Haki nullified the capability of being spatially influenced by Law’s non-awakened Room, consistently giving the Gura Gura spatial interactions.
We’ve gone over Whitebeard’s in-verse strength, Haki, and Devil-Fruit, all of which helps us define the power of Whitebeard. Possessing the strongest Paramecia power sentiments Whitebeard’s destructive capabilities and attack-power beyond any other Paramecia, not to mention the fact his fruit is weaker than no logia. The emphasis of his ability to destroy the world is reiterated several times and reinforced by many other things, so piggybacking off of what I already said, we can look at the scale of what Whitebeard is capable of destroying, even going with the narrative of him at least life-wiping, it’d still be impressive because:
The world of One Piece takes place on a quantifiably gigantic planet known as the “Blue Planet” and this gigantic nature of the planet is supplemented in Oda showcasing how continental worth of ranges are utterly insignificant to the planet among various other things. Continents exist in One Piece like Antarctica and Oda verifies the existence of regions that stem from real-life like the Arctic, which also ends up being marked on the Red Line on the official Rurubu map, all of which fits well onto the planet as something small in the grand scheme of things. Thanks to the databook, “Dive Into The Grand World”, we get a literal depiction of the planet that is usable for defining the sheer scale of the planet:
The Blue-Line expands across the width of the biggest continent in the One Piece world, known as the “Red Line”, the Orange-Line expands across the width of the Calm Belt and the Red-Line expands across the Grand Line’s width. From this, we can gauge just how expansive the Grand Line, the Calm Belt and the Red Line are in comparison to how these continental worth of ranges are insignificant to the planet at large and the Green-Line represents the diameter of the planet and how insignificant the other colored lines are dwarfed. I will be using this as a frame of reference to put into perspective the size of the Planet. There are many ways to quantify the scale of the planet and you can find consistent methodologies, one of those metrics is using the sizes given by Oda:
1.) Alabasta is a country located in the Grand Line, which has a river 50 km in width, only for it to be a thin line in comparison to the vast expansion of the full country, making Alabasta equivalent to the large countries if not the very low-end continent sizes, yet in comparison to the much more expansive body of water, Alabasta is insignificant from an aerial shot within One Piece’s very large atmosphere. Factoring in that Alabasta has a climate zone, which isn't just within the landmass itself but also extends outside of the landmass out in sea and they didn't get within its climate zone until they got closer and closer to the island. Most Islands on the Grand Line have their own Climates which always expand outside their region without needing to make shore and that adds to the size of the Planet because Alabasta's climate zone, extending further than the already huge landmass, is still insignificant to small parts of the world.
2.) Viola has the ability to see all things within a 4000 km radius, which is further supplemented by the Vivre Cards reaffirming the fact she’s actively using that range to acquire all the information and yet can hardly see much beyond the vast reaches of sea extending out from Dressrosa, let alone extending past the Grand Line or anywhere close. Everything Viola can perceive fits within the Grand Line and we can find that it remains consistent with Wano. Oda uses “1000 ri” to highlight the size of Wano which is greater than 4000km, something he uses not just once but twice with Bajrang Gun. As you can tell, the choice of wording is different, the arrows transmitted were beyond 1000ri and still within the range of Wano and Luffy’s Bajrang Gun was to be heard across 1000ri, which is important to note because the people at Udon didn't notice it. They only pick up on a disturbance when a Volcanic eruption spikes, not from the reverberations of the fist, meaning the distance from Flower Capital and Udon are essentially thousands of kilometers away, adding to the consistency of them transmitting arrows beyond 4000 km to reach all across of Wano. Where is Wano? Also within the Grand Line, like all of the other Islands the Strawhats travel to.
3.) This metric establishes the distance to horizon of the Blue Planet, going back to Alabasta, where from a height of the Go Merry which is 11m in height, you are able to see things from 50 kilometers away as they mention the fact they can see the far-bank of the other river, keep in mind that they realistically are seeing less from a height of 11m due to the fact that 11m also accounts for the flagpole, which they were not on, making it consistent with the fact Go Merry’s height isn’t even the bare minimum, even from less than a 11m’s, they can still see the other side while on Hasami and this river is verbatim stated to be stretching 50 km in width. To put into perspective how big that is, a distance to the horizon from a planet like Earth from just 6 meters above surface level, you can see up to 8 kilometers using this calculator, on a planet like Jupiter, you can see up to 28 kilometers from a height of 6 meters. It’s safe to say Hasami is around that height, so the fact the distance to the horizon on the Blue Planet is 50 kilometers compared to giant celestial bodies like Jupiter which is only 28 kilometers from a 6m height speaks volume and consistency for the size of the Blue Planet. This would make the Blue Planet about 3.2 times the radius of Jupiter and 2.9 times the diameter of Jupiter.
The main comparison I used was the Grand Line to put into perspective how big it is, but do not forget the premise, this is to highlight the scale of the Blue Planet. The Grand Line in terms of width is already incredibly small in comparison to the vast majority of the Blue Planet, which as we established the Grand Line makes continental worth of ranges/sizes look small in comparison to itself through its sheer length and width, supplemented by the distance to horizon methodology. In summary, I’m not arguing the Blue Planet as just slightly bigger or generously bigger than planets like Earth, I’m arguing it’s greater by the dozen as the bare minimum and you can find a consistent result in that using various methods, usually exceeding Jupiter sizes.
Having life-wiping power is easily made consistent with Whitebeard’s casual generation of earthquakes. As I’ve mentioned before, Earthquakes in irl that are 9.5-9.4 in magnitude can reach teratons levels of energy accounting for its total seismic energy and the most crucial aspect about this is that earthquakes of such magnitude generate Tsunamis way less than the hundred-meter mark in height, often in the 20-meter range, this is a relevant point that I’ll bring up again in just a bit but, the most important thing to note is Whitebeard by feats easily dwarf that, which he does so through natural phenomena meaning that we can compare. This is supplemented by Garp stating he created a literal sea-quake and then it coming back as a tsunami, as well as the fact it’s stated outright Whitebeard powers influence the external world and trigger natural phenomena, making it obvious to us that Whitebeard effects literal tectonic-plates and generates natural tsunami’s. The main comparison we’ll draw from to quantify Whitebeard’s Earthquakes is the Tsunami height:
As mentioned in the Devil-Fruit section, these Tsunamis tower over 180m sized structures, putting them near the 1 kilometer measurements of height if not more based on many other calculations and the fact these Tsunami’s are legitimately viewed as Island-sized but we’ll just use 900 meters as the bare minimum and even that still quantifiably dwarfs the highest magnitude of irl natural earthquakes by magnitudes through the fact he creates these natural phenomena, supplementing the fact he’s dwarfing the country tier easily and he’s not creating one Tsunami, he’s creating two that are both the same height. The reason why we can gauge and compare Whitebeard’s earthquakes and real-life ones is because a tsunami’s height can define an earthquake’s magnitude which fortunately, Japan does so as well based on this study, however it’s not just because of the tsunami height, it’s due to the fact it’s a natural earthquake, which means Earthquakes generated through faults/tectonic plates, aka displacement of land something Whitebeard does to generate his tsunami’s. These studies specifically focus on the natural phenomenon of earthquakes to quantify tsunami height and its relation to an earthquake’s moment magnitude, so to even begin to qualify, the mechanism has to be the same.
We know 1.) Whitebeard is stated to outright make natural earthquakes 2.) Outright stated to have made a sea-quake that is also capable of generating tsunami’s hundreds of meters in height 3.) Earthquake Magnitude having relations with the height of a Tsunami. All of these things equate to us rightfully being able to quantify the magnitude of Whitebeard’s Earthquakes due to that, by using the Moment Magnitude to Tsunami Height relationship formula, we plug in the H for the height (in this case, 900 meters for WB’s tsunami height) of the Tsunami which gives us a magnitude 11 and that moment magnitude’s energy can be found based on this study, using this formula. We put our given magnitude from the Moment Magnitude to Tsunami Height relationship with the seismic moment formula, which gives it a result of 4.56893e+26 J or 109.2 petatons putting it in the Multi-Continental tier replicated by an Old Sick Casual Whitebeard, let alone what he can actually do in his Prime. We’re not going to just look at Whitebeard’s feats though, as it’s supplementary evidence to look at what devil-fruit among the same classification as the Gura Gura No Mi can do as it is canonically less capable than the Gura Gura No Mi.
Law performs one of the best feats in the verse with his Puncture Wille, driving a sword all the way into the ground towards the point it reaches Wano’s Magma Chamber and then utterly pulverizing rock in the path the sword extended, which resulted in this massive hole. Wano is at least around the 4000 km range in size like I talked about before when mentioning the Planet’s size, what I didn’t mention is that originally Wano was much bigger than that, but it was flooded, reducing the landmass significantly. This includes Mount Fuji, which was previously even more enormous than what we usually see depicted in the background. The Wano landmass we see today is built on the side of their version of Mount Fuji, meaning it’s connected to the enormous mountain and this enormous mountain has a constant depiction that has remained consistent and it’s the fact Mount Fuji is more tall than it is wide and in the case of Puncture Wille, it extends all the way to the Magma Chamber, the deepest part in Wano. What this means for Puncture Wille is that it utterly reduced the rock to borderline nothing thousands of kilometers deep and the side-effect of the generated shockwave caused literal fissures that we see extending beyond the created hole which too are thousands of kilometers in length.
Of course, the width of the hole is pretty big too. Wano has a very mountainous terrain, we know that the tall-rocks that stick out are Wano’s mountains. The hole made by Puncture Wille is wider than the mountains but even more so, the hole’s width is comparable to that of Flower Capital which means bigger than Onigashima as Onigashima can fit within the flower-capital and Onigashima carries several mountains that it’s verified as its own mountain-range. Calculations place Onigashima around 22 km’s at least, which makes Flower Capital greater than that. With the Kuz-Ram model, which is a method quantifying the fragmentation to pulverization from blasting, thus we can appropriately tier Puncture Wille using the model since Puncture Wille’s method of destruction is shockwaves that blast through material while drilling through rock with said shockwaves. The method requires a certain material of rock, aka the “rock factor”, which isn’t particularly difficult to find given that Law drilled into a Magma Chamber where rock like basalt is found, however even if you use the lowest rock factor in the equation, the result is still extremely high. The formula to quantify the feat is depicted here, where X is the mean particle size of the extent the rock was reduced to which in this case would be pulverization (0.001 cm), A is the rock factor (meaning the type of rock) however we used the absolute lowest which is 0.8 just to lowball and K is the powder factor, the kg explosive per cubic metre of rock being the frame of reference. Even using significantly lowballed results, such as only taking the depth of the hole to be the same size as Wano even when it’d be bigger, then using low-end sizes for Onigashima/Flower Capital and using non-pulverization particle sizes, the result is 27 petatons aka Multi-Continental. Using more appropriate versions for the depth, radius and the particle size the rock was reduced to, you get a higher range of results, which as you can see if Pulverization was actually used, the result is massively higher. Essentially, what makes the feat so impressive is that Law’s Puncture Wille is reducing a volume of rock comparable to that of countries and possibly even continents to powder depending on whether you’re intentionally downplaying the feat, like disregarding the fact the depth of the hole is clearly intended to be greater than Wano is wide. Regardless of the route you take, the necessary strength of the attack in question to do that is tremendous and is the reason the nature of the feat is so high, fragmentation/pulverization based feats work best with the Kuz-Ram model, assuming the methodology is comparable.
Byrnndi’s aim was to destroy the World Government for what they’ve done to him and to achieve that, he’d combine his Paramecia powers with his ships cannonball that allows him to increase the speed and power of things by 100x. The first demonstration of this was when he evaporated an entire island, generating a blast that also dwarfed it. That is what Byrnndi was going to use to wipe out Mariejoa in one-shot. Why is this impressive? Mariejoa is referred to as being the world’s middle stage on a drawn map from Oda himself, centered on the Red Line and yet Mariejoa is shown expanding all the way near the edges of the Red Line despite being positioned in the center of the Red Line. What’s even more supplementary of this is the “Red Port”, a transportation system that allows legal visitors to enter Mariejoa, being on both sides of the Red Line. We get to see what specific part of the Red-Line Mariejoa is centered on as well and thus how that specific part looks in relation to the Grand-Line. Considering all this, it means from side to side, Mariejoa expands across the Red Line, that is more or less is comparable to the Grand Line’s width, thus Byrnndi’s cannonballs are vaporizing land that is several thousands of kilometers from side to side which going back to the Planet’s size would make the destruction of Mariejoa a very impressive feat. It would be more accurate to say Mariejoa is expanding near or at tens of thousands of kilometers. Evaporating a landmass of such magnitude is Multi-Continental for sure.
These are supplementary feats of the statements concerning Whitebeard’s capabilities, this is to say that Multi-Continental is not Whitebeard’s upper limit but in fact on another tier entirely. Threatening the world, especially on a scale that is the One Piece Planet is easily Moon levels at the bare minimum, especially given the mechanics is through Natural Earthquakes where Whitebeard’s fruit would be capable of affecting tectonic plates and fault-lines of the One Piece Planet that are big enough it can support an earthquake which shakes the entire planet and displaces the sea to rise one-meter globally. Our real-life planet, Earth, has crustal limits in being able to support an earthquake capable of displacing the sea where it’d rise one-meter globally, which is just further evidence as to why the Blue Planet is bigger than irl Earth. The whole idea that Whitebeard is capable of destroying the world should already support the fact his quakes are on another level, when again, he does this through natural phenomenon. The nature of the Gura Gura No Mi is incredibly underrated and by narrative is intended to be capable of destroying the world, which is just supplemented by the natural earthquakes he generates, something only possible if he was affecting crust tens of thousands greater than what Earth’s crustal limits.
Whitebeard being among the strongest in the verse expresses that his level of speed is very much up there given that light-speed is achieved and surpassed by characters that would not survive in the upper echelon of power. For example: Light-Speed was reached by Luffy during the timeskip, we know this because he needed to be that fast to match a 10x Amped Speed Byrnndi, verbatim in a canon special episode during the timeskip who reaches light-speed without even going full-speed. Luffy grows stronger in this fight and becomes FASTER than 10x Byrnndi who needed light-speed reactions and movements to compete with, forcing Byrnndi to amplify his speed by 9x, aka becoming faster than light and yet that still wasn't enough. Luffy manifests the flames of Ace, “Red Hawk” a high-speed ignited punch and in the process, performs an insane speed feat. Byrnndi lunges at Luffy moving 100x his base speed covering a distance where he’s only meters from tagging Luffy but in that duration, Luffy extends his arm several meters out before Byrnndi crosses that full distance, then shortly after extracts his arm back into place as it ignites meaning that Luffy’s arm covered that distance again while Byrnndi is still a meter or so away from tagging Luffy with the end-result being Byrnndi getting completely blitzed from this attack in terms of sheer movement:
We can get a sense of the distance necessary for Luffy to cross, given this shot of the area. Luffy at this point is 172cm (1.72m) tall and pretty small in comparison to the length of the room which isn’t even accounting for everything given that shot doesn’t show the other side of the spiked wall which Luffy’s fist extended to. That’s at least 10 meters, meaning Luffy extended his arm over that distance twice (making the distance another 10m) all before Byrnndi could cover the meter distance, which is stupidly fast when put into numbers, but obviously warranting faster than light speeds in the dozens of ranges.
After returning from his Timeskip training, Luffy has improved in every aspect and demonstrating one of those improvements is his reaction capabilities. Pacifista fire not one, not two but three lasers, to which he calls the second one “too slow”:
Not only is it quite literally a replication of Kizaru’s lasers, but it is stated to straight-up be a light-ray, which means everything because the only reason Kizaru lasers are light-speed is due to its nature and that’s light. Moving on from that, we enter Fishman Island and are introduced to Energy Steroids, a power that doubles the power of the user with just a single usage. While it enhances your striking ability, it also enhances your speed as well which is particularly what we’ll be tackling. As established, a Luffy who was weaker than his Beginning Of Timeskip version was able to combat light-speed and blitz it, consistent with Beginning Of Timeskip Luffy calling light “too slow”, so it is especially impressive when Fishman Island Arc introduces characters capable of reacting and even tagging Luffy in that arc. Luffy ends up punching and seemingly speed-blitzing Hody Jones henchman while in Gear Second, except Hyouzou was the only one who reacted and tagged Luffy, hence Luffy calling him strong because of that. This is without Energy Steroids, which he takes later on, being double the strength he was initially and he’d continue taking more and more, being “way stronger” than usual, resulting in him achieving an awakening. That means he was in fact several times stronger than before as you need multiple steroids to even achieve said “Awakening”. To Zoro, he’s a mere warmup and that is perfectly demonstrated where near the end of the fight, he insults him and it being stated that they dealt with Hody’s henchman with ease:
However, we’re not done because Hyouzou was working for Hody Jones, not the actual leader nor the strongest. Hody in base was able to counteract an attack from Zoro and compare that to how we’ve seen Zoro using attacks that can combat a massively amped Hyouzou. Zoro eventually however beats Hody, forcing him to resort to energy steroids. In order to deal with the injury sustained from his fight with Zoro, he had to continuously pop these steroids resulting in him undergoing an awakening too. How many steroids did he consume? After getting punched by Luffy, he spits up a good amount of pills he consumed and we see that it’s an entire handful that spills out of his hand, easily dozens, however just counting the amount that fell out of his hand, that number being 15, 2^15 = 32768x, meaning Hody Jones was operating tens of thousands of times above his original capabilities which already was in the tier of light-speed and yet in the grand scheme of things, Hody Jones is fodder, after all, a Fishman Island G2 Luffy’s Red Hawk speed-blitzed him.
After moving on from Fishman Island and Punk Hazard, in Dressrosa, we are given a Doflamingo dedicated storyline, a capable fighter who usually stems as the baseline into nearing lower Commander levels. Doflamingo with his insides destroyed by Law is still able to fight competently with Luffy‘s “Gear Fourth”, a significant power boost and during that time, his strongest form, operating several times beyond Luffy’s limit, meaning that includes Gear Second, a form we know is a greater amplification than Gear Second which raises Luffy’s speed more than 2x from his base. This means Doflamingo was fighting a form of Luffy several times stronger than his Gear Second, which is more than 2x stronger than his base. Now, Doflamingo is fast enough to avoid and tag a Gear Second Luffy and react to Gear Second Luffy, yet Gear Fourth is able to perception blitz Doflamingo from multiple city-blocks away, being able to perception-blitz a caliber on Doflamingo’s level is easily warranting faster than light speeds mind you because we’ve seen inferior characters like Pre-Timeskip Hawkins quite literally perceive a light-speed attack coming at him, Pre-Timeskip Luffy included. Doflamingo’s only way to compensate speed-wise against Gear Fourth was with Observation Haki, such as sensing where Luffy will attack to protect himself and he would consistently perform this well with his Awakening applied too, blocking attacks in time from a Gear Fourth Luffy for a whole 20 minutes.
In this arc, we are quickly shown that Yonko's highest tier of fighters present way higher stakes compared to what Doflamingo is capable of. Cracker, the third commander of the Big Mom Pirates already shows being more overwhelmingly powerful to Luffy than Doflamingo actually was. Gear Second gets easily dealt with and Gear Fourth struggles avoiding Cracker’s speed on more than one occasion. Where the speed disparity really comes in though is Katakuri, the strongest of the Sweet Commanders in the Big Mom pirates. He easily kept up with Gear Second Luffy’s Red Hawk, something that we established well and clear blitzes, light-speeds and faster. Katakuri demonstrates easily speed-blitzing Gear Second Luffy as well. Luffy’s only real way of “standing a chance” at that time was with Gear Fourth and even then, his Boundman version was still hilariously outclassed in the face of Katakuri’s Future-Sight. Future-Sight is a higher application of Observation Haki, meaning those who obtain such have greater efficiency than Basic Observation Haki, allowing them to better react and counter attacks. So where light is too slow compared to Luffy's reactions, Future-Sight creates an even greater disparity. Luffy needed future-sight to actually stand a chance against Katakuri, which he ends up getting and in Base, tagging Katakuri, something his Gear Fourth Boundman couldn’t do, making Luffy’s combat-speed in base with future-sight alone greater than his G4 Boundman. To further hammer that in, Luffy uses his Gear Fourth Snakeman, a speed-oriented form of G4 which explicitly makes him faster, faster than Boundman even without future-sight, let alone with future-sight. The form also accelerates its punches so Luffy is progressively getting faster and still Katakuri outperforms.
After Whole Cake Island and obtaining a buff, Luffy enters Wano and is humbled by top-tiers. A Base Kaido speed-blitzes and oneshots a Gear Fourth Boundman. Luffy is forced to grow stronger so that this doesn’t happen again and he does, even after getting stronger, stronger than his Gear Fourth Boundman at the start of Wano, Kaido’s Thunder Bagua in base still poses a massive threat speed wise where he just barely avoids it, decisively putting Kaido’s Base Thunder Bagua significantly above a beam of light just through comparing how Luffy treats light and how Luffy treats Kaido while using future-sight. Base Kaido’s speed stops being a threat and is exceeded by other characters in the same arc by virtue of them keeping up with Hybrid Kaido’s Thunder Bagua as with zoan-type devil fruit’s, your physicals are enhanced and instances of characters competing with this form of Kaido extends to fighters like Yamato keeping up with Kaido’s speed in his Hybrid form and eventually Luffy after he unlocks new buffs, he avoids a Drunken Hybrid Kaido’s Thunder Bagua who’s even more buffed than he was in his fight with Yamato due to him being in his Drunken Style state, Luffy doing this while in Gear Second.
It’s not just Luffy, Kaido and Yamato that have direct scaling chains to light-speed that they exceed, so do characters like Sanji, Queen and Marco. Queen replicated all of Germa’s abilities down to the core, meaning Niji’s ability to move at the speed of light, achieved because of the lightning he generates which is why the yellow text refers to it as a lightspeed thunderstrike born from science, the same technique he uses against Sanji and that also means his reactions are able to keep up since he can control where he’s going, as in One Piece, if you cannot perceive the speed you move at, you’ll end up incapable of controlling where your movements are like Kuro, so it is incredibly impressive that Marco can just speed-blitz Queen or Sanji moving at his fastest being hilariously faster than Queen, completely blitzing his perception speed.
These arcs establish the general idea that light-speed is comfortably surpassed and how characters with scaling over light-speed start to get gapped as the level of power in characters progresses. The top-tiers treat speeds of such sort as fodder, including the character’s with scaling greater than light-speed. Kuzan shows a disgusting speed-advantage over Doflamingo where he can flash-freeze him before he can cross the distance to kill Smoker, the Kuzan that was pressed by an Old Garp, especially speed-wise on more than one occasion or Big Mom, who on two separate occasions has shown tagging Niji, one time at her tea party and the other when they tried escaping sentiments that light-speed fighters are absolutely zero issue for Big Mom and her being able to speed-blitz Queen, but most impressive of all, being fast enough to tag Marco. Big Mom who was relatives with the Old Dying Whitebeard we see clash with Emperor’s like Shanks. The Old Generation demonstrate dealing with these characters who have light-speed and greater feats, like again, Garp who out of his Prime is speed-blitzing Marco before he could even dodge despite literally noticing Garp coming at him:
A First Commander that has feats of moving in time to intercept a light-speed attack from Kizaru, so this very blatantly establishes an Old Garp has faster than light speeds. Old Rayleigh shows being able to consistently counteract Kizaru’s light-speed and faster movement, something again a Post-Wano Snakeman Luffy struggled and eventually failed to do like Rayleigh. Old Whitebeard himself shows being able to stop Kizaru from moving his photons while just previously getting pierced and hit in the chest with magma. The disparity between where the top-tiers are in the verse and where light-speed starts is a hundreds to thousands of times gap at the bare minimum and that’s mostly just considering quantifiable multipliers like Luffy’s Gears and Hody Jones Energy steroids, let alone the fact characters actually blitz each other while operating significantly above the speed of light.
Whitebeard, like most relevant fighters, can fight hours and days. Roger and Whitebeard’s battles have lasted for three days with both fighters not coming out significantly harmed. Whitebeard can sustain his level of power over the course of several days meaning any hope of tiring him out is less likely. Whitebeard’s endurance allows him to push through massive amounts of damage as well, this was particularly a major obstacle for the Marines as Whitebeard would just refuse to go down despite the punishment he was put through and this was again, a Whitebeard far from his Prime. The wounds he suffered in the war were from hundreds of attacks:
This doesn’t reference all the Admiral attacks Whitebeard faced against, suffering from having half his face blown off by the most offensive devil-fruit in the series and pierced by that same devil-fruit through the chest leaving a permanent hole as well as being pierced by Kizaru’s lasers. Even after all that sustained damage, Sengoku is completely shocked at the power Whitebeard still possesses as he watches one of his greatest fighters, Akainu fall.
