So Scary 8- A Howling Christmas

It was the dead of winter. Joseph Drake have just returned from his deer hunting. He never had a chance to catch one, especially in a day like this. He was entirely alone hunting, since most of his friends were having a wonderful time at Christmas.

Joseph sure had the gut feeling that he could somehow catch the deer, if he was careful enough. Unfortunately, he was having a tough time. The snow had drenched his pants and the thought of getting to his house, would eventually make his mother very unhappy.

Joseph's mother had been hungry alright. A woman of 60 years old, and she couldn't wait for the deer meat that she always wanted. She remembered clearly of how she had eaten that food, when she was a young woman. The lips on her mouth kept watering often, whenever she thought about it. Sometimes, Joseph wiped her mouth with a dry cloth. There was nothing else better to eat than deer meat.

When Joseph returned, Mrs. Drake expected to see some deer, hanging around his back. But she was disappointed when there was none.

"Didn't catch any?"

"Nope. It managed to escape my traps."

"Jesus Christ, Joseph. What are we going to do?"

"Listen, Ma. Just don't do anything that I wouldn't do. Okay? Last time, I remember you've been calling out DEER! DEER! in your sleep. I couldn't even sleep, you know."

"I don't care! I want my deer. Dear Lord... Is it that hard to catch? I remember your father used to catch it all the time, but you..."

"I've caught them before, Ma."

"Yeah... That was years ago when your wife left you for some rich guy, who had a lot of money. Pfft!" She then spat on the floor.

Joseph shook his head and said, "Ma... Don't do that."

"The hell I don't!" She pressed the button and moved her wheelchair to the living room. "Just fix me damn soup!"

"Okay..." Joseph sighed and went to cook some pea soup in the kitchen. It was enough. But Joseph started to get real hungry when he heard a big roar in his belly.

Christ... I need something to eat. But what? He stared out the window. It was getting dark soon.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"DEER! DEER!" Joseph tried to sleep in his bedroom. He could still hear his own mother, crying out for deer meat. He woke up and went slowly toward his mother's room. "Ma?"

He opened the door, and saw that she was still sleeping.

Christ! I wished she hadn't left me. What did I do wrong? Joseph often wondered about that. It was probably because the woman of his dreams, didn't think that Joseph wouldn't turn out to be a good hunter at all. But that wasn't the case. Oh no. There were other reasons. He had his drunken friends...

Oh... wait. He just realized something. Is that what's it about? He couldn't even remember. All those years of hard work and spending time with his wife... But then he still couldn't figure it out. He even asked her why she was leaving him.

"Oh, stop it," Joseph said to himself, after recalling of what his ex-wife had said. He closed the door and went back to his room. He stopped when he heard a howling sound.

Jesus Christ! He shivered at the sound of it. He didn't think that a wolf would come out at this time night. Not even in a million years. But he wasn't sure about that. He went slowly downstairs, just to check and see if the wolf was really outside his house. Because it sounded like the wild animal was near.

He opened the front door, and breathed heavily. He gasped.

Holy Christ! There was a dead deer on the ground, and this time it was the wolf who was eating it.

I... I think I'm going to be sick. He threw up on the floor, and saw what he did. Oh God. Ma wouldn't like this. The wolf stared at him with those yellow eyes. Then it snarled.

Oh no. He closed the door immediately and locked it. It was banging the door and then howled.

"Get away! Just get away!" The wolf was clawing through the door as it attempted to get inside the house. Then it stopped.

"JOSEPH!"

Joseph heard his mother while staring at the door. Then he went upstairs to her room, and said, "Ma?"

"What's that sound?"

"Um... It's a wolf."

"A wolf? What's it doing here?"

"How the hell should I know? This is the first time..."

"Watch your language!" Mrs. Drake stopped him. "Just get me up, will you?"

"That's not necessary, Ma. You sleep right here. I'll take care of it."

"I seriously doubt that."

"Ma... This isn't the time. Just get in the bed."

"Okay, just get rid of it. It's scaring me."

Joseph closed the door behind him and sighed. He went downstairs and then grabbed a shotgun from the wall. He checked to see if it was loaded. Then he walked slowly towards the front door and stopped. He put his ear behind it, listening for any howling sound.

I don't think it's out there... He grabbed the doorknob, opening the door. He raised the shotgun, pointing towards nothing. It was dead silence.

Okay, buddy. Wherever you are, I'm right here. He looked around the place, and tried to ignore the dead deer. Then... something moved behind his back. There was a small shed, where the wolf stayed hidden all along. It jumped after Joseph. He turned around and fired.

The wolf howled in pain and managed to get up. It bit the hunter's arm.

"AAH!" Joseph used his shotgun to whack the wolf's head. But it wouldn't let go. He hit it again. And this time, the wolf escaped from him.

"Damn that wolf!" Joseph said loudly. "Ah... God." His arm was bleeding pretty badly. He went back inside the house to clean the wound.

"Joseph?" Mrs. Drake said, while arriving at the kitchen. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, Ma. I'm fine."

"Did you kill it?"

"No... It got away."

Mrs. Drake sighed. "I knew you wouldn't able to kill it. What kind of son you have turned out to be."

"That's enough, Ma. I'm bleeding badly here."

"You should go and see a doctor."

"Yeah... I'll do that."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next few days, Joseph have returned from his hunting as usual. And this time, he finally caught the deer.

"Hey Ma! Look what I've found." He dropped it on the floor.

"Oh, Ma! Don't be like that. You should be proud of me. If you hadn't said, DEER! DEER! in your damn sleep, I wouldn't have..." He stopped and stared at his mother.

"Maybe I should bury you somewhere else. You're starting to reek."

Next story- A Christmas Nightmare on Elm Street.
